Historical Romance Review: Bandit’s Embrace by Georgina Gentry

    TOTAL SPOILER ALERT ⚠

    The Book

This review is of Bandit’s Embrace, book #3 of “The Durango Family” sub-series, and #4 overall in the “Panorama of the Old West” series by Georgina Gentry.

    The Plot

    The Amethyst Nun

Bandit’s Embrace begins with the heroine Amethyst Maria Consuelo Durango, being delivered to a convent in Mexico. This is not Amethyst’s decision but rather that of her stepmother, Monique, who wants Amethyst gone for personal reasons.

Amethyst seeks to stop this plan by finding someone who will help her.

Meanwhile, in Bandera, Texas, a drifter named Bandit is participating in a card game. Among the other players is the notorious Oklahoma Kid. When Bandit accuses the Kid of cheating, gunfire erupts, and Bandit kills the Kid. He escapes with the Kid’s horse, then realizes that he has something he didn’t bargain for: a stolen Army payroll.

Bandit hightails it to Mexico, where he and Amethyst meet for the first time. She offers to pay him for the horse, but he refuses. That’s because he needs the horse to escape the other members of the Kid’s gang—and possibly the Army, who might be pursuing him.

Amethyst and Bandit share an attraction. They soon have sex.

While Amethyst is being pushed into a convent, Bandit’s life is going differently. He agrees to pretend to be Tony Falcon, the long-lost son of wealthy Mexican rancher Enrique Falcon. This is part of a scheme by Falcon’s evil foreman, Romeros, to obtain money and power.

    Bandit and the Outlaws

While Bandit is somewhat happy to be part of a family, he is less happy to discover that Enrique has affianced Tony to his friend Gomez’s daughter. That feeling changes, however, when, at a party, Bandit discovers that his fiancee is Amethyst.

Other guests of that party are Gomez and the aforementioned future stepmother, his fiancee, Monique Dupre, whom Amethyst doesn’t like, for various reasons.

It turns out that Monique and Bandit have a history. Furthermore, she is in a conspiracy with Romeros to steal Gomez’s fortune. We also learn that “Monique,” like Bandit, isn’t who she says she is.

As the book goes on, we learn more about Bandit’s childhood and past with his mother, Lida Anson. It’s not pretty or happy. When he hears that the three other members of the Oklahoma Kid’s gang are trying to find him, Bandit leaves Mexico, hoping not to get the Durango and Falcon families involved in his fight. It seems that hope will not be realized.

The three surviving members of the Oklahoma Kid’s gang kidnap Amethyst and hold her, hoping to ambush Bandit and get the money back. Bandit goes to rescue her, and he will get some unexpected help doing so. A group of Mescalero Apache Indians find the outlaws and kill them, and Bandit discovers part of his heritage.

After escaping the outlaws, Bandit returns to the Falcon ranch, where he confronts Romeros. A violent fight ensues, and Romeros and “Monique” are both killed.

Bandit learns another life-changing fact, he and Amethyst marry and have their Happily Ever After.

    The Upside

In many ways, Ms. Gentry’s books are like a big flow chart. Everyone in the books is connected to each other; in some ways tangentially, in others by blood.

Bandit is the titular character and, by far, the most interesting person in the book. We learn about his past—it’s sad and not pretty—and understand his reasons for becoming a gunslinger.

    The Downside

Sadly, Ms. Gentry doesn’t provide the same depth to Amethyst. She checks off all the “romance novel heroine” boxes: she’s beautiful and she’s sexy. But she also lacks depth, and I found I didn’t care for her as much as I wanted to.

In her previous book, Comanche Cowboy Ms. Gentry achieved a more balanced portrayal of depth between her hero and heroine. However, in this book, the focus is primarily on Bandit.

I didn’t feel a whole lot of chemistry between Amethyst and Bandit. There was lust, for certain, but not a lot of loving chemistry.

    Sex

Ms. Gentry’s love scenes are what I call “soft erotic” romance. That is, they are slightly steamier than most mainstream historical romance love scenes (in terms of sexual positions, acts, etc.)

But they would not come close to approaching what would be classified today as erotica.

    Heat Level

The steam forecast is steamy and sensual.

    sensual heat Georgina Gentry

    Violence

The early books in the “Panorama of the Old West” series are quite violent, and Bandit’s Embrace follows that trend. Violent scenes here include assault, battery, rape, stabbings, shootings, and killings.

There are also torture scenes. One character is gored and killed by a bull.

    Bottom Line on Bandit’s Embrace

Bandit’s Embrace is not as good as it could have been. I felt like Ms.Gentry left a lot on the table here.

    Synopsis

    TOO AROUSED TO RESIST

When her scheming, jealous stepmother-to-be forced Amethyst Durango to enter a convent, the headstrong heiress swore she’d experience life to the fullest before being shut away. And when her violet eyes gazed upon the handsome Texas drifter at a sleepy stage stopover, Amethyst knew she’d found her mate. His sensual glance made her shiver with anticipation; his big calloused hands would electrify her with ecstasy. But when he galloped off afterwards without any promises to rescue her, the deceived senorita vowed she’d get back at the double-crosser—even if it meant never savoring his lying lips again!

    TOO LUCIOUS TO BE LAWFUL

Rangy, rugged Bandit knew how to hold his cards, his liquor and his women, but when he first met the alluring Mexican maiden, he knew this was one gal he shouldn’t touch! She was too young, too innocent, and too rich for a no-good mixed-blood cowboy like himself. Still, he couldn’t stop his mouth from crushing hers any more than he could keep a stallion from a mare. And after he’d tasted and teased her, and pleasured and pleased her, it was too late to tell Amethyst he was on the run—and he could never again shelter her in his BANDIT’S EMBRACE.

  • Once upon a time…

    Once upon a time…

…a red-hooded woman ran away and served a disgraced lord in his cottage. All was well in the northern woods.

Until a wolf knocked on their door.

I’m happy to announce, The Lord Meets His Lady, is on sale. This novel represents a labor of love, a mis-step in my career, and a big lesson in writing.

You’re probably curious about those three points, right? Let me break them down for you.

I loved leaving London with this book. The entire setting is a cottage in the northern countryside. Society’s glitterati is fun, but I needed a break. So, I went to Coldstream, which is about as far north in England as a body could go.

The infamous Coldstream Bridge which connects England and Scotland. If Gretna Green is the Vegas of quickie weddings, Coldstream is Reno.

And the most unexpected secondary characters showed up: horses!

But you want to know about my career mis-step. This is a painful point. It took about a year and a half to write this book. I was woefully late. No editor likes that.

Then came a big challenge: How to keep the fairy tale theme going?

    Enter Red Riding Hood.

It was a test to make a light play on that age old fairy tale.

My research revealed Red Riding Hood was a cautionary story for young women throughout Europe from medieval times forward. “Beware of men who would prey on your sexuality.”

Lord Marcus and Genevieve Turner danced circles around that!

Sometimes a woman wants the forbidden.

With that said, I invite you to enjoy The Lord Meets His Lady.

I dig into viking culture and go beyond the “Odin and Valkyries” worshipping Vikings. There’s a reason for pointing this out.

In the same way, our modern era has Baptists, Methodists, Presbyterians, etc. The same was true for Vikings. This truth plays into the life of Ilsa, the heroine, and other women of Vellefold.

    Easter: Festival of Flowers

On Easter Sunday, April 2, 1513, Juan Ponce de León, a Spanish explorer, and his crew discovered a new land in what is presently the state of Florida in the United States of America.

It is believed that de León named this land La Pascua Florida, which means “Festival of Flowers” in English, to honor the holiday, the holiest day for Christians.

However, although it was during Holy Week, that day was a Wednesday, not Easter Sunday.

  • Secretly Yours by Tessa Bailey

    Secretly Yours by Tessa Bailey

    Our Review

SECRETLY YOURS is the first book in the A VINE MESS series, and I look forward to reading more. Set in the Napa Valley, this is Julian and Hallie’s story and it involves wineries and wine–of course.

Hallie is a gardener and landscaper who doesn’t like schedules. Her life is chaotic with three dogs that she takes almost everywhere with her. She still misses her grandmother, who has died and with whom she lived and worked. Julian is a professor at Stanford and has taken a break to write a novel. He is nothing but punctual and lives by the clock. When their paths cross, there’s a lot of chaos along with schedules and romance.

Julian and Hallie are nothing alike, but they do say opposites attract—they sure do! She remembers him from high school fifteen years before, though he has no recollection of her. Hallie has pined from afar for all those years and decides to secretly do something about that now. Their miscommunications are what romcom’s are made of, in addition to his comedic, dysfunctional family that he’s trying to make whole again. There are some laugh-out-loud moments as well that gives a lightness to the story.

I enjoyed getting to know the characters, including the secondary ones, which added another layer to the story. Communication is key, and Hallie and Julian definitely have trouble doing so especially when his schedules are disrupted by none other than Hallie, who is planting around the guest house he’s occupying. But there’s definitely chemistry, and when they finally act on it, there are steamy moments (and very rarely are they between the sheets.)

SECRETLY YOURS has a good flow and is filled with angst, romance, and ultimately love in several different forms. There is closure, but do I wish the story went on just a little longer. I look forward to reading more in this series.

If you like some laugh out loud moments along with romance and some loving, give Tessa Bailey books a try.

  • National Parks Confession: I want to see them all, but here’s why I probably won’t.

National Parks Confession: I want to see them all, but here’s why I probably won’t.

An image of Arches National park with title "Park Confessions: I want to see them all."

“I dream of visiting all of the National Parks.” The woman rubbed her hands together and her voice buzzed with intensity as I signed a copy of my new novel, Where the Trees Touch the Sky: A Redwood National Park Novel for her. “All 63 of them. I’m mapping out my dream trip.”

I can’t tell you how often readers have said this to me–and to be completely honest–I’ve said it too! We collect the stickers on keepsake maps, write out bucket travel lists, and create Pinterest boards for our dream trips. News programs occasionally highlight tourists who have accomplished these sorts of goals, like this man who visited all 425 NPS sites (including monuments and other various designations) in a single year, or the youngest to visit all the parks, or––my personal favorite––Grandma Joy, the oldest person to visit all 63.

I don’t know about you, but when I see these stories, I get an overwhelming urge to tick all the NP boxes.

But how does our perspective shift when we make “seeing them all” our goal?

When we race through our journey, we risk missing the very experiences we’ve been dreaming about. A national park is more than a pretty view. Each has a unique spirit, whether it be the landscape, the wildlife, the history, or how people interact with the location. And typically, you can’t tap into this experience with a one-hour visit to get your passport stamped.

Think about your best experiences with nature when you were a child. Was it about getting another park stamp? I doubt it. More likely it was taking the time to watch a caterpillar walk along a leaf’s edge. Or wading in a creek and letting the minnows nibble your toes.

Many of us have lost sight of that childlike wonder. Rather than soaking in an experience, we’ve boiled it down to a checkmark. The Japanese term, shinrin-yoku, is loosely translated as “forest bathing.” If we take the time to slow down, turn off our devices, and close our to-do lists, it gives our bodies and souls space to breathe.

Our national parks are busier than ever, but I sometimes wonder how many visitors are seeking the rest and rejuvenation provided by nature instead of racing about trying to visit every view they saw on Instagram. When my husband and I planned our Zion trip last year, I did my research. I watched YouTube videos about trip planning, perused the park’s website, and educated myself on the shuttle system. There are multiple Facebook groups and discussion boards dedicated to Zion trips, and almost all the posts focus on two specific must-see hikes. After reading through the posts, it’s easy to buy into the idea that without these experiences, you’ve somehow missed out on what makes Zion unique. It’s FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) at its worst.

But the truth is quite the opposite. What if you visited Zion and spent time just sitting beside the Virgin River, listening to the sound of the water rushing by? You could stare up at the Navaho sandstone cliffs and watch as the light changed from minute to minute–from the dawn colors to the glare of the afternoon sun and shadows. Maybe you’ll choose to hike one of the lesser-known paths and be blessed by spotting a sunbathing lizard or a herd of bighorn sheep. Would your trip be somehow “less than” for not jockeying for position at one of the must-see locations? Probably not.

I recently turned in my manuscript for my next novel, set in–you guessed it!–Zion National Park. My main character is grappling with this very issue as she walks away from a high-powered career to spend the summer at Zion, only to saddle herself with a lengthy to-do list for her stay. [Don’t bother looking on Amazon for this book quite yet–it’s not scheduled to be released until fall, 2025. Stay tuned!]

Two sets of feet kicked back in the foreground with Mount Rainier in the distance.

My favorite trails at Great Smoky Mountain National Park were those labeled simply as “Quiet Walkways.” They don’t take you to an epic waterfall or gorgeous viewpoint. It’s all about experiencing the forest itself. My favorite thing to do at Mount Rainier is find a quiet place to sit and then soak in the mountain’s magnificence. I introduced my daughter to this concept on a recent trip–showing her both my favorite unpopular trail and my special secret spot.

So every time I feel myself longing to visit all 63 national parks, I need to slow down and remind myself why I love the national parks in the first place. It’s about experiencing the beauty and peace that nature has to offer. To “meet” each park with an open mind, and then spend time truly getting to know it. Rather than visiting Utah’s “Mighty Five” in five days, or “one week to see as many US NPs as possible” I’d prefer to spend those same days visiting one or two and really immersing myself in everything they have to offer.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with the desire to “see them all.” Just be sure your trip doesn’t morph into exactly what you’re trying to escape about day-to-day life–just another task to complete.

    Happy travels, everyone!
