  • Desperate Acts by Alexandra Ivy

    Desperate Acts by Alexandra Ivy

    Our Review

Kaden Vaughn is a former Hollywood stunt driver. He believes the skeletal remains found in Pike, Wisconsin, belong to his brother’s fiancé. Kaden intends to solve the woman’s mysterious disappearance for his deceased brother. However, the authorities’ methods in handling the case seem shady and dubious. Kaden’s only ally is the owner of the local grocery store. Someone does not want them poking their nose into the case and tries to scare them off. Can Kaden protect Lia from the true murderer? What terrible secrets will they dredge up? And at what cost?

Lia Porter runs and operates her family-owned grocery store. When a body is discovered near town, she recalls an incident she had witnessed fifteen years ago. Lia disagrees with the authorities’ conclusion on the case. The only person who shares her suspicions is the ruggedly handsome stranger from Hollywood. She and Kaden start their own investigation, only to learn more than what they bargained for. Someone in Pike wants to keep their secrets hidden, and they are willing to kill to keep them. Will Lia become another unfortunate victim? Will she and Kaden solve the fifteen-year-old case?

Kaden is such a positive inspiration. He came from a rough upbringing with an alcoholic father. Kaden wisely escaped that lifestyle and found his path in life. I admire Kaden’s determination to honor his brother’s memory by solving the case that destroyed him. He may not have liked his brother’s fiancé, but he set aside his differences to investigate her strange disappearance. What I like the most about Kaden is his protectiveness towards Lia. He knows their investigation is dangerous, and he did not want to jeopardize her safety or livelihood.

It took me a while to warm up to Lia. She came off too serious and strait-laced for my tastes. However, my opinion changed as the story progressed. Kaden’s presence allowed Lia to tap into her hidden adventurous side. I understand Lia’s dislike of how others viewed her. She grows tired of being labeled as a dependable, by-the-book killjoy, who refuses to take risks. What I admire the most about Lia is her reasons for keeping her family-owned grocery store open. It is more for the residents than profit.

DESPERATE ACTS is the fourth book in Alexandra Ivy’s romantic suspense series, PIKE, WISCONSIN. This is my first foray into the author’s romantic suspense books. I am more familiar with her paranormal romances. The story can stand alone. The only commonality each book in the series shares is the setting: a small town called Pike in Wisconsin. I like how the story focuses more on Kaden and Lia’s amateurish investigation than their romance. The romance element is there, but it is subtle.

DESPERATE ACTS is a gripping tale of two strangers partnering up to solve a cold case. I plan on checking out the other books in this series. I cannot wait to learn what other dark and dangerous secrets Pike, Wisconsin has.

  • One Duke Down by Anna Bennett

One Duke Down by Anna Bennett

    Our Review

Andrew Keane, the Duke of Hawking, travels to an English seaside resort town to escape scandal. However, trouble follows him there. Keane wakes with an aching head and a fiery-haired woman hovering nearby. He plans to discover the identity of his attacker, but first, he needs his rescuer’s assistance. Keane cannot ignore his growing curiosity of the beautiful angler, especially her distrust of the nobility. Will Keane and Poppy figure out his assailant? Can he convince her to take a chance with him? Or will their differing social status stand in their way?

Miss Poppy Summers is a fisherman’s daughter. She takes over the family’s angler business, while caring for her ailing father. Poppy discovers an unconscious man washed up on the beach and tangled into her nets. She suspects the man will be nothing but trouble, especially when he claims to be a duke. Poppy reluctantly agrees to help Andrew Kean find his assailant. She soon becomes swept up in the adventure and the man. Can Poppy trust Keane with her heart? Will she dare fight the social barrier dividing them?  Or will Keane prove to be like the other members of the ton?

Keane is a delightful surprise! I could not help but fall in love with the charming rascal! Keane is a man who has survived his father’s belittling contempt, but he never allowed it to harden him. I adore Keane’s generous heart. He would willingly step in and help someone from the working class against his peers. What I love the most about Keane is that he is not conceited or pompous. He does not care about class distinction. Keane never once put on airs around Poppy or disparaged her way of life.

I am thrilled that Poppy received her happily-ever-after. She deserves it. Poppy has this scrappy personality that I cannot help but adore! She is not afraid to speak frankly or stand up for herself when necessary. I understand Poppy’s negative outlook on the nobility. She has weathered their disdain and superiority all her life; however, she knows there are a few exceptions. What I love the most about Poppy is her dedication to family. For all her brother’s flaws and faults, she has never given up on him or abandoned him. Plus, Poppy sacrificed her dreams for the future to care for her father.

ONE DUKE DOWN is the second book in Anna Bennett’s historical romance series, ROGUES TO LOVERS. The story can easily stand alone. However, I would highly recommend reading the prior book, GIRLS BEFORE EARLS. It introduces the prominent setting, a charming little seaside town called Bellehaven Bay. It also shows the sweet friendship between Poppy, Hazel, and Kitty, plus their secret sisterhood. I love how Kitty and Hazel play important roles in the story’s development.

ONE DUKE DOWN is a whimsical tale of two people managing to overcome their social standing to be together. I finished this book in two sittings because I really did not want to put it down. I wonder if Kitty is the next Belles to find her special someone. I cannot wait to find out!

Deception by Patricia Bradley | Romance Junkies

    Our Review

DECEPTION by Patrica Bradley is book 4 of the

The investigation takes a decidedly strange turn when a woman who looks just like Madison is attacked on the same night Madison’s grandfather is shot. Before Madison come to grips with her grandfather’s shooting, she finds herself a target.

I really enjoyed DECEPTION with all its twists and turns that were unique and interesting, but I was frustrated that obvious bad guys were overlooked time and again. But even so, I couldn’t put the book down and recommend it.

Bad Boys Don’t Date Clumsy Girls by KE Strand

    Our Review

BAD BOYS DON’T DATE CLUMSY GIRLS is book 1 of the Oak Grove High series, a young adult romance by KE Strand.

Ava Landry is hopelessly clumsy, but with her dysfunctional home life it’s no surprise. The only thing that keeps Ava sane are her brother, Joel, and her best friends, Bek and Sam—until bad boy Dylan walks into her safe haven and turns her life upside down.

KE Strand has seamlessly woven themes of familial love, romance, and friendship into this book and ends with a different twist that shows troubled people have the capacity to change. This book will make you cringe, cry, and warm your heart. I highly recommend this book.

  • Just Another Love Song | Romance Junkies

Just Another Love Song | Romance Junkies

    Our Review

Sandy Macintosh grew up loving her high school sweetie, Hank Tillman, in a very small town they both wanted to escape as soon as possible—Sandy to become an artist and Hank to become a singer/songwriter. When he goes away to college, her scholarship falls through, and she’s forced to stay in the town, living at home. When they next see each other, she hears their friends talking about how exciting it is to be experiencing new things. She fears Hank will realize how unhappy she is and come back, thus ruining his future plans—so she breaks up with him.

Fifteen years later, he walks into the grocery store in town. She now owns a nursery and is still an artist but with plants. He’s a famous country singer, now divorced, with his young son in tow. The town is so small, and the residents’ lives so intertwined, there’s no way for them to avoid each other. Now what?

I really liked these two characters, along with all of their friends. The small town residents all seem to be friendly folks who want the best for each other. I was annoyed that Sandy is too afraid to admit, even to herself, how she still feels about Hank. But I was more annoyed to discover this is a sweet romance. When they finally have their big moment, I was hoping to discover just what Hank meant when he said, “I’ve become better at a lot of things since I was seventeen.” Instead, the next page has them eating ice cream out of the container—afterward. WHAT? My mom used to drop-kick books across the room when writers staged a big build-up then gave the reader no satisfaction (no details.) I feel the same way. But if you like sweet romance, you’ll love this book.

  • Summoned to Thirteenth Grave

    Summoned to Thirteenth Grave

Summonded to Thirteenth Grave by Darynda Jones

This is the 13th and last book in the series. I haven’t read the other books, so there were times that explanations about the relationships between the characters were confusing. Charley and Reyes have a whole lot of history between them, and between her being THE Grim Reaper and him being a demon, there have been many clashes as they fell in love and married. They have a young daughter who is destined to lead the side of good in a final battle versus evil. But they’re too busy fighting evil in the present to be able to raise her. So the human parents who raised this incarnation of Reyes are raising his more-than-human daughter.

What I enjoyed the most was the author’s amusing tone. Charley has nicknames for body parts—hers and other people’s. She has nicknames for all of their friends, who all have quirky backstories that are only briefly alluded to. And the passion that burns between her and Reyes is hot enough to melt sand into glass! (Don’t ask, just read the book.) The challenge in this book is that a rift has been created between hell and earth, and demonic entities are rushing through to inhabit the bodies of living humans, turning them into zombies before they die. Charley and Reyes discover it was their actions that caused the rift, which will destroy the entire world in three days. Since Charley has just returned from a century in hell, she’s upset that she doesn’t have much time to enjoy being alive again, before she has to jump into saving the world—again.

The story was engrossing and entertaining. My only beef is that since this book is the last in the series, it’s assumed that you’ll have read all of the other ones, so I was missing the backstories to all of the characters. But still, I enjoyed reading this book. The conclusion doesn’t really seem to be much of an end, so there may be a future for the characters—just not in this series.

  • A Sweet Lowcountry Proposal by Preslaysa Williams

A Sweet Lowcountry Proposal by Preslaysa Williams

    Our Review

A SWEET LOWCOUNTRY PROPOSAL is the second book in the Brides of Lowcountry series and the only one I’ve read. I do plan to read the first book in the series, A LOWCOUNTRY BRIDE. This is Marcus and Jaslene’s story. (Marcus lovingly calls her Jazz.) They have a history and planned to be married, but the wedding never took place due to a sad event that happened on their wedding day. Will they find their way back to each other as friends or more?

I love stories written by Black authors whose books are culturally rich. This book did not disappoint and has an Afro-Filipino twist. Set in the lowcountry of South Carolina, this story has Marcus as an archivist at the Lowcountry African American Heritage Museum.

Marcus and Jazz work well together. She’s a wedding and event planner and is starting to make a name for herself. She also helps with a fundraiser for the museum, which exceeds everyone’s expectations.

The story has a nice flow and held my interest from the first page to the last. Especially interesting are the ancestral tales and traditions. There are highs and lows to the story, and Marcus and Jazz make a good team. Jazz’s niece is a nice addition to the plot along with her love of the violin. There is satisfying closure on several fronts and the happily ever after is presented nicely. I love the cover.

  • The Heart of a Hero by Susan May Warren

The Heart of a Hero by Susan May Warren

    Our Review

THE HEART OF A HERO is the second book in the Global Search and Rescue series and it did not disappoint. My adrenaline was high and my heart was racing as the story unfolded in different locales. Set in Minnesota, the Florida Keys, Russia, and Italy, there were many plot lines woven nicely together. The descriptions made me feel like I was there.

In THE HEART OF A HERO, Aria and Jake take one step forward and many more back as their paths cross over and over again. They never seem to be on the same page at the same time as they deal with many perils, including hurricanes, people they befriend, injuries, illnesses, escaped inmates, and more.

There are so many twists and turns to the story, and every detail is important—whether currently or sometime in the future. We meet up with many of the characters we met before in Alaska (in the previous book) and even when they’re not at the forefront, their stories are important. It was nice seeing how their lives were panning out once they left Alaska. The ending, while surprising, leads us into the next book in the series, THE PRICE OF VALOR, and I can’t wait to read it.

If you like action and adventure stories with mystery and romance set in various locales, pick up this book. You’ll be glad you did.

  • The Price of Valor by Susan May Warren

The Price of Valor by Susan May Warren

    Our Review

THE PRICE OF VALOR is the third book in the Global Search and Rescue series, and I’d love for there to be more. This is Ham and Signe’s story, but it includes so many of the characters—both good and evil—that were woven throughout the first two books in the series. It might be best to read them in order. Nonetheless, THE PRICE OF VALOR had me turning the pages to see what would happen next. I couldn’t read fast enough!

The story is set in Minnesota, Washington, D.C., and Sicily with the mention of other places as well. The vividness of the descriptions made me feel like I was there.

There is a cloud over Signe’s head. She’s supposedly a rogue CIA agent, and while Ham sometimes has his doubts about her, he can’t believe it to be true. His team is there to back him up when the evil gets pushed to the forefront.

There are so many twists and turns to the story and many threads being woven together. I loved seeing how others on Ham’s team were faring when not working a case. Ham and Signe’s daughter played an important role in this tale. Clues from the first two books were brought to fruition here, so it’s best to read the books in order.

The author did a terrific job of portraying the friendliness of the Sicilian people, and the small-town feel resonated with me. The closure is satisfying, but I’d love to meet up with these characters again. I love the cover and how it reflects the importance of the volcano in the story.

Only having read the books in this series penned by Ms. Warren, I do look forward to reading more of her books.

  • Secretly Yours by Tessa Bailey

    Secretly Yours by Tessa Bailey

    Our Review

SECRETLY YOURS is the first book in the A VINE MESS series, and I look forward to reading more. Set in the Napa Valley, this is Julian and Hallie’s story and it involves wineries and wine–of course.

Hallie is a gardener and landscaper who doesn’t like schedules. Her life is chaotic with three dogs that she takes almost everywhere with her. She still misses her grandmother, who has died and with whom she lived and worked. Julian is a professor at Stanford and has taken a break to write a novel. He is nothing but punctual and lives by the clock. When their paths cross, there’s a lot of chaos along with schedules and romance.

Julian and Hallie are nothing alike, but they do say opposites attract—they sure do! She remembers him from high school fifteen years before, though he has no recollection of her. Hallie has pined from afar for all those years and decides to secretly do something about that now. Their miscommunications are what romcom’s are made of, in addition to his comedic, dysfunctional family that he’s trying to make whole again. There are some laugh-out-loud moments as well that gives a lightness to the story.

I enjoyed getting to know the characters, including the secondary ones, which added another layer to the story. Communication is key, and Hallie and Julian definitely have trouble doing so especially when his schedules are disrupted by none other than Hallie, who is planting around the guest house he’s occupying. But there’s definitely chemistry, and when they finally act on it, there are steamy moments (and very rarely are they between the sheets.)

SECRETLY YOURS has a good flow and is filled with angst, romance, and ultimately love in several different forms. There is closure, but do I wish the story went on just a little longer. I look forward to reading more in this series.

If you like some laugh out loud moments along with romance and some loving, give Tessa Bailey books a try.
